Funeral for teen who died playing basketball

Plans have been made to say goodbye to a City Honors student who died nearly two weeks ago.

Fifteen-year-old Lamont Yancey died after he passed out while playing basketball at the school on September 25th.

Calling hours for Yancey are Thursday from Noon through 5:00 p.m. at St. Luke African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, located at 314 E. Ferry Street in Buffalo.

Funeral services, described in Yancey’s obituary as a “celebration of life,” will take place Friday at 11:00 a.m. Those services will also take place at the St. Luke African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Yancey will be buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Instead of flowers, Yancey’s family asks for contribution to be made in honor of Lamont to the City Honors Foundation or the Youth Department of St. Luke African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.

Last weekend, students gathered to hold a vigil for the teen, describing his as a great student and kid.

Principal William Kreese told the Buffalo News, “Lamont was a gentle soul who was incredibly polite and had a smile for every person at our school. He took great pride in being a student at City Honors and playing a part in our basketball program.”

Family members respectfully declined to talk to 7 Eyewitness News on camera, but they say the last few days have been very difficult.

Grief counselors were on campus at City Honors School to help students cope with Yancey’s death.
