The death of 9-year-old Jamyla Bolden has saddened so many across the Metro area. Now, one of our city’s most prominent families is stepping in with an act of kindness for the Bolden family.
Ira DeWitt, the wife of St. Louis Cardinals President Bill DeWitt, will be paying the full funeral expenses of a little girl she never knew.
Jamyla and her mother were both shot in their home Tuesday night. Jamyla died from her injuries and her mother is home from the hospital after being treated for a gunshot wound to the leg.
When Ira heard about the murder, she immediately knew what she wanted to do.
“She was an honor student and she was doing her homework on her mother’s bed and it literally broke my heart,” said Ira of the moment she heard Jamyla’s story. “And I have two children, and not only can I not imagine going through something like that, but then to worry about paying bills for your child’s funeral is like something that’s just so sad.”
Ira was hesitant to share her story of generosity. She says this moment is not about her, but she’s also heartsick about the violence in our community. She says she hopes others in the community will show support and come forward to solve Jamyla’s murder.
The suspect, who shot Jamyla and her mother from outside their home, has still not been captured. Police Chief Andre Anderson has pledged that officers will do everything possible to find the person responsible.
“I hope that the community helps in catching these people,” said Ira. “If somebody has information, they need to come forward to the police and let them know.”
